AN EXPRESSION OF CONCERN

"The authors of this letter, including several transsexuals, are  deeply unsettled by recent disclosures of how gender identity issues in children are being handled by GIDS, the Gender Identity Development Service, allegedly in response to pressure from trans lobby groups.
Notably, the recent resignation of Marcus Evans as governor of The Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust and his allegation that staff work in “a climate of fear” resulting in highly vulnerable children and young people at risk of "long-term damage”.
We call for an independent open inquiry to examine claims of serious concern with current treatment protocols.
Too little is understood about long-term effects on the body by puberty-blocking hormones administered to young school children. We fear that these drugs, though given in hope of improving lives, may actually result instead in unforeseen lifelong consequences for those they were meant to help.
It is also of huge concern that some clinicians report feeling inhibited from being able to conduct thorough assessments for fear of unwarranted accusations of transphobia. Gender transition must not be fast tracked as complex issues such as abuse, autism, bereavement and homophobia can influence a child's feelings.
Those of us who are transsexual went through a more cautionary process of assessment and believe it vital to revive this treatment approach.
The future health and welfare of any young child must take priority. Their individual psychiatric needs cannot be sacrificed to lobby groups with an ideological agenda.
Otherwise we fear another lost generation of confused and distressed young people inadvertently consumed by the bitter trans debate. It is these children who will pay the price of society's failure to be cautious.
We cannot stand by and watch that happen."
